Effa Louise Manley, who was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was married to the owner (Abraham Manley) of the Negro League’s Newark Eagles baseball team, actively managed the team and is the only woman to ever manage an all-male professional baseball team. She was the first and is the only (to date) female inductee to the National Baseball Hall of Fame (2006). Although she was actually white (the child of her white mother and a white man from an illicit affair), she passed as a fair-complexioned black woman because she was raised in a home with a black father. She co-authored Negro Baseball: Before Integration (1976).
