In September 2017, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter (1981– ), known in the musical world as Beyoncé, released a single recording, "Mi Gente," which in Spanish means "my people," to raise relief money for people affected by devastating earthquakes and hurricanes—those living in Mexico, the Caribbean, Florida, and Texas. She will donate all proceeds from the recording to relief efforts.
Beyoncé was born and raised in Houston, Texas. She first performed at a young age as the lead singer in an all-girls group Destiny's Child, which became one of the most popular R&B groups in the late 1990s. She began performing in films in 2001 (Carmen: A Hip Hopera and Goldmember) and released her first solo album, Dangerously in Love, in 2003. She has since performed in other films, including a role as R&B legend Etta James in Cadillac Records, and released additional albums, including Lemonade (2017). With her mother, Tina Knowles, she ran a clothing line—House of Dereon. In 2008, she married Jay-Z, a well-known rapper and music mogul. She has won several Grammy Awards and performed twice at the Superbowl.
